The Wonderful World of Swagger... and Social Media Marketing

When I began here at Swagger three weeks ago as the new marketing assistant, I expected my new job to be a breeze. Since graduating from college three years ago, I have imagined myself with a career in marketing. In college, I majored in drama and communication, and as a former actor, I am quite familiar with the term ‘shameless self-promotion’. With my background and experience, I figured that a marketing job would, quite simply, come naturally to me.

I had no idea what I was in for.

Let me backtrack for a moment and tell you that I have always been a fan of simplicity. I have intentionally tried to keep myself away from most ‘social media’ networking sites. I am on Facebook occasionally, maybe two or three times a week at most. I have a Twitter account - technically - that I attempted to use two years ago and gave up on because I just didn’t get it. As for Pinterest…nope. Instagram?

Y’all, I'd never even had a smartphone.

Yup. That was me.

So you can imagine my surprise when I came in to my first day of work– and had inadvertently thrown myself into the Wonderful World of Social Media.

Now, moving along to the point quickly, as my boss may be reading this and wondering why he hired me, I will tell you now that I am--

Of social media.

You can pre-schedule posts on Facebook?! You can find targeted audiences on Twitter by typing ‘near’ and then ‘:’ and then whatever city you want?! You can make pictures look amazing with this thing called ‘Instagram’?!

Okay, the last sentence is an exaggeration because I did know a little about Instagram. The point is I can’t believe what I had been missing out on for so long, which had been, quite literally, right beneath my fingertips.

Did I have my doubts? Absolutely. Has it been frustrating at times? Oh, yes.  But I am in love, and there’s no turning back. When I think about how I once defined ‘marketing’, I wonder how I could have been so na├»ve. In this ever-changing world of technology and trends, there is no easy way now to effectively market without social media.

This weekend was a historical marker in the life of Tricia. I bought my first smartphone - an iPhone 5! I am both excited and terrified about my purchase. Excited because this big new world is now right in the palm of my hand. Terrified because… well, I suppose for the same reasons. But the excitement outweighs the terror, for sure.

All that being said, I have successfully completed my third week at Swagger Films, and I couldn’t be more excited about what is to come. Everyone here is awesome – a truly great team of amazing people. Angela is the bee’s knees. She knows about social media more than Charlie Sheen knows about winning, and can whip out quality content effortlessly. She has been so incredibly patient with me, and hasn’t rolled her eyes at me once – not even when hearing the silliest of questions, like ‘So I don’t even get retweeting. What’s that about?’

So yeah. I’m only getting started, and I have so much to learn. And to be honest, I probably still have no idea what I am in for.

But I can’t wait to find out.
