A Slice of Title Design Pie

There’s been a design trend going on lately called the "slice-through" trend.  This is where you have your design, text, or logo sliced through the middle in a unique way.  

Sprint does it:




The movie Insurgent did it: 



And Spike TV even created their ads based on this slicing: 







Needless to say, this design is currently the cat’s pajamas (and that’s the trendy way to say something is trendy - thanks Internet!). But, what inspired this design? Enter Saul Bass, title designer for the great American horror story, Psycho.


It’s easy to see the modernized take on Saul Bass’s classic design. I find it interesting to know the origin of trending designs because they almost always draw on inspiration from the past.
